Deck Inspections

Decks are the most overlooked Inspection aspect of a Home Inspection. But a deck is a gathering location for parties, cook outs and family get to gathers. Lets face it deck failures are common and usually result in multiple and serious injuries, and who is usually on your deck…..Family and friends you want to protect the most!  David Haught ACI EP has performed over 5,000 inspections and about 3,500 deck inspections and with only a very few that met code requirements.

Most Decks are the “last thing built” when a home is constructed, usually with little care or they are constructed by a local unlicensed fix-it-man or untrained handyman. Most have never seen a code book, or have read to learn what is needed to properly construct a deck     to meet code and be safe.

If you have been lucky enough to have a well built deck, time and exposure to the elements is the enemy. Most wooden decks have a useful life of 10 to 14 years with proper annual maintenance. Even the new decks built with a man made products made of a combination of wood and plastic have about the same life, because the structure holding the deck boards have an average 10 to 14 year life.
